Japanische Biografie
ISBN 4-88202-304-0
This edition is the Japanese edition of the autobiography "Movin' On Up," which Mahalia Jackson wrote in 1966 together with Evan McLeod Wylie. The book was intended to record Mahalia's life story and her personal perspective on her career. Although "Movin' On Up," as stated in the original edition, was intended to be Mahalia's authentic narrative, it is questionable whether it really succeeded in doing so.
There are indications that Mahalia expressed frustration with Wylie's "misrepresentations" of her oral tradition and the presence of misinformation. This suggests potential inaccuracies or interpretations of her words by the co-author that did not fully match Mahalia's own recollections. Nevertheless, the book offers intimate insights into Mahalia Jackson's life that are, in a sense, first-hand and is the first "Mahalia book" ever published.

Dutch biography of Herman Uyldert
LANNOO Publishers, The Hague, 1962
This work is a combination of biography and music-historical essay. It was published in 1962 by Lannoo Publishers (Tielt / The Hague) as part of the series “Idols and Symbols” (Humanitas Booklet No. 36). The book is dedicated to the life, work, and deep religious convictions of Mahalia Jackson. The book is divided into several thematic sections that complement one another chronologically and analytically: The Amsterdam Context (The Night Concert of 1961): The book uses a historic night concert at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw on April 22, 1961, as its central thread. It describes the electrifying, almost sacred atmosphere in the hall and the artist’s physical and emotional exertion. Music-historical digression: The author offers a concise overview of the development of African American music. The progression is traced historically from the work songs of the slaves through the spiritual and the blues to jazz and finally the modern gospel song.
